The Cause and Effect of Urbanization
Urbanization occurred when people starts to move together and form cities. This reaction started during the nineteen century industrial revolution, when the industry rose, and when factories appeared. People no longer stay inside and do family works, instead they need to work at factories.
The main reason that urbanization happened is because of the industrial revolution in the nineteen century. Factories bristled like trees, and machines have been invented during that time. People start to understand the importance of using resources and energy in the environment. Merchants and factories owners gather workers to work at their companies, to weave or to make products for the people.
Industrial revolution is a huge step of human’s society. During the time, intelligent people invented machines, which brings huge amount of products. Commodities no longer done by handmade, instead the machines take over people’s work, making better and more products. This not only can help factories’ owners to save salaries, but also decrease the prize of commodities. In view of the machines take over people’s work, people can no longer work at home. People started to go outside and work in factories, also, move toward the factories. The invention of steam machines helps factories to gather in a same area. Factories changed their power resource from water power to steam engine. Factories no longer need to stay close to rivers, instead they can gather at crowded places.
Cities formed, people started to connect to the society, and also face different problems that come after industrial revolution. It was common to see women and children labor work for ten or more hours a day in factories. Women and children’s salaries are a lot cheaper then men’s, so instead of using strong man as workers, factories’ owners prefer to use women and children labors to work for them. Young children need to do dangerous work in factories for more then ten hours a day, and they can’t go to schools unless they have money. This make the rich richer, and the poor poorer. Also, because people started to gather in a same area and still don’t understand the important of sanitation, many diseases have been spread. A lot of people died because of diseases such as plague in the eighteen hundreds. Pollution is another serious problem that followed the urbanization. Air pollution, water pollution, or other kinds of pollutions kept destroying our environment in a rapid way. All the smoke and waste that we produce while making products harm the earth seriously.
Urbanization brings convenient life to the modern society, but it also causes many serious environmental problems. Instead of blaming the urbanization and factories, I think we should try to find ways to make up for our mistakes. People should try to protect the environment if they want to use the resources in it, therefore, our environment will still be rich with natural resources and we people will always have resources to use.
